Valerian For Dogs – Is It Effective Against Stress and Is It Safe?

What is Valerian Root For Dogs?

Valerian is a natural herb that has been used for centuries as a remedy for various conditions in humans, including anxiety and sleep disorders. Some pet owners also explore the use of Valerian for dogs to help with anxiety or stress-related issues.

We are led to believe, Valerian works by increasing the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to the brain, but no one knows the exact science behind it. Valerian root may link via the receptors of the GABA, which blocks nerve transmissions between neurons that stimulate activity.

Before giving any herbal supplement to your dog, it's essential to consult with a veterinarian to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your pet's specific situation.

Valerian Can Help In The Following Ways

1. Anxiety and Stress Reduction: Valerian is believed to have calming properties and can help reduce anxiety and stress in dogs. It may be useful in situations such as separation anxiety, travel anxiety, or during loud events like fireworks or thunderstorms.

2. Sleep Improvement: Valerian is known for its sedative effects and may promote better sleep in dogs experiencing sleep disturbances or insomnia.

3. Nervousness and Hyperactivity: Some dogs may exhibit nervousness or hyperactivity, and Valerian may help to relax them and reduce excessive excitability.

4. Muscle Relaxation: Valerian is thought to have muscle-relaxing properties, which could be beneficial for dogs with muscle tension or discomfort.

5. Digestive Issues: In some cases, Valerian may help soothe mild digestive issues in dogs.

6. Mild Pain Relief: Valerian's muscle-relaxing properties may provide mild pain relief for dogs with minor discomfort.

It's important to note that while Valerian has potential benefits, it may not be effective for all dogs or all situations. Additionally, the effectiveness of Valerian for dogs may vary depending on the individual animal and the specific condition being addressed.

Is Valerian Safe For Dogs?

Valerian in some cases can make animals drowsy and it will interact with certain medications. Care should be taken if your pet is receiving anti-epileptic or anti-fungal medicines.

Valerian For Dogs Side Effects?

Valerian root is considered a safe supplement with minimal to no known side effects. However, side effects can happen. The root can interact with other medications including anesthetics, sedatives, anti-epileptic medications, and antifungal drugs. We’d advise to speak to your vet first before administering the supplement prior to a procedure.

Additionally, dogs that are pregnant, lactating, or puppies under 4 months old, should not take the supplement, because the root’s safety hasn’t been evaluated with these specific demographics.
